About Us

Firebird manages four private funds dedicated to investment in publicly traded equities of companies operating in the former Soviet Union and emerging Eastern European countries, as well as two global equity funds. Firebird also manages several funds dedicated to investment in Mongolian securities, and co-manages two private equity funds focusing on the Baltic States.

Harvey Sawikin


co-founded Firebird in 1994. He is a lead manager of Firebird’s Eastern Europe and Russia funds. He also serves on the Management Boards of the Amber private equity funds. Before founding Firebird, he was a clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals and an M&A specialist at the prominent law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Harvey is a graduate of Columbia University (Magna Cum Laude) and Harvard Law School (Cum Laude), where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is a member of the New York State Bar. Harvey serves on the board of PR Foods (Estonia) and is a Trustee of Churchill School and a member of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Photographs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Ian Hague - Image

Ian Hague


co-founded Firebird in 1994 and is a lead manager of Firebird's Eastern Europe and Russia funds. He is a recognized expert on politics and investment in the former Soviet Union. Ian graduated from Wesleyan University with a BS in Russian Language and Literature, has a Masters in International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and did graduate work at Columbia University's Harriman Institute. Ian served until recently on the board of the Bank of Georgia and he continues to serve on the boards of several companies in the region. Ian speaks Russian and French in addition to English.

James Passin - Image

James Passin


James Passin joined Firebird in 1999. He co-founded and manages Firebird Global Fund, Firebird Global Fund II, Firebird Mongolia Fund, and Firebird New Mongolia Fund. James is a graduate of St. John’s College, where he majored in philosophy and classical literature. James serves on the board of directors of several Mongolian and Canadian companies, including Sharyn Gol JSC (MSE: SHG), BDSec JSC (MSE: BDS) and Khot Infrastructure Holdings, Ltd. (CSE: KOT). James is a recipient of the Mining Sector 90-Year Anniversary Honorary Medal from the Mongolian government and was awarded the Honorary Medal from Khentii Aimag, Mongolia. James was also named “Fund Manager of the Year” at the 2012 Mines and Money Conference in Hong Kong. James is a Chartered Market Technician and member of the Market Technicians Association.
